My parents divorced when I was 7 & I saw my dad when I was 8, 17 and again after 40 for about an hour. I never knew him as his current family does and sadly, I do not even know my step-brother and sister. But then again, that is what divorce does to many children and families. A parent may love a child to pieces and vice versa, but when divorce rears its head, the kids get torn.
I am sad he is gone. We would talk once in awhile about getting together to attend a NASCAR race, but it never happened. My dad died of ALS (Lou Gehrigs Disease). I am sad for his family the ones that knew him like I didn't, for his grandchildren who adored him, his wife who took such wonderful care of him. I am sad for my aunt who no longer has her brother. But, I am not sad for myself. Is that odd?
I sit back and watch his obituary and what others say about him and I am glad that he was a kind man and helped so many others through his volunteerism and sports & I am glad, his legacy will live on in their memory.
