Job Fairs Are A Waste of Time....Seriously

Add this to the 23 things Human Resources Professionals won't say to your face: Job Fairs are an absolute and total joke! A waste of time for those serious about looking for job & a break from ones real job for those blessed to still be working.

Unless you have a company that is hiring 30+ people at one time, my opinion is if you are looking for work, save your gas, time, lunch money, etc. stay home and do what you are going to be told to do any way...'go to our web-site and see if there are any jobs available.'

The people at the job fair aren't the ones that do the hiring, they aren't going to tell you what they are looking for or who, they are going to say, we do our hiring through the internet.

So, what did I get for my 45 mile trip to Olympia besides the chance of going to Costco to pick up some milk?

Just 4 business cards. That's it! The jobs they are hiring for, I have already applied for. Even the temporary agents asked me if I applied to their web-site...yes!

Bottom line in my eyes and several others I have spoken to and I believe it to be so...if you are over the age of 45 forget about being hired. Most of the people doing the hiring, aren't looking for experience, they are looking for cheaper labor.

Oh well, after I walked up and down both sides of the mall and was starving, I sat down to eat and realized my grands friend and her mom were sitting across from me. We chatted, I left.

Sometimes, we are so impersonal and why job fairs that yield nothing are held is beyond me. Guess it is so we can show how many people are out of work!

They reported large numbers attending, people getting there early, but none of the ones I spoke with or heard as I passed by were hiring, they were all referring people to their website! Some had tons of resumes, but had no jobs. One lady said she needed more than the 20 hours at minimum wage most were offering. It was just disappointing!

Bummer! Sorry it wasn't more productive. I'm sure it must have been very disappointing.

I agree with you. They don't want anyone over 50. I bet I applied for 30 jobs in the months I wasn't working. But what I really hated was the ones that never bothered to reply back to say the job was filled. Now I am working for less than I was making 10 years ago. But I had to find something because my DH is off work for 3 to 4 months after surgery. I hope you find something soon. And I didn't reply to the post about your granddaughter, but I hope everything is starting to improve. Girls can be so cruel at that age.

Amen Patty and what are they going to do, read my blog and determine they don't want me for being honest?
When you have more experience and education than those interviewing you, you can see the fear in their eyes...'oh no!' They think we want their job and not the job we are applying for and yes, employers are rude, by not calling!
