Scouting Ten Essentials Bags

I am not a survivalist, but I do believe in being prepared, having extra water on hand, supplies, etc. but I do not do it to the hoarding proportion because very possibly I don't have room to put it all.

However, one thing my grandson being in Cub Scouts has taught all of us, is you should always have a small day pack with your ten essentials in it, even if it is left in the car for an emergency.

His sisters who are Girl Scouts have been taking things for years to school like small first aid kits that fit neatly into their packs they keep with them.
Here is what goes into the pack for every meeting and outing:
  1. First aid kit
  2. Filled water bottle
  3. Flashlight
  4. Trail food
  5. Sunscreen and sun protection
  6. Whistle
  7. Map and Compass
  8. Rain gear
  9. Pocket knife
  10. Matches or fire starters.
My grands also like keeping a small mess kit in theirs, a few dollars, extra batteries and we highly recommend using sunscreen towelettes if you are keeping this as we do for a long time.

We found out the hard way, how messy and gooey sunscreen without a lid can be in the summer time when it spills out into a backpack.

Here are two I made today for the kiddos:

These can be used for a myriad of things and they are much easier for the kids to carry than a heavy bulky backpack on short trips or to meetings!

Just be careful they don't take the matches to school. They can get in trouble for that! :(
