End of the Eggsperiment

I am happy to report this morning that the 2 eggs made it to school for oldest to tell the class about the experiment. Of course, being second graders, they weren't to keen on the pooey smell from the vinegar, but they really thought the eggs felt cool and they could see the yolks from underneath.

Shy was able to explain what she had done and how long it had been and then the kids all got to feel the eggs. Her teacher asked what everyone thought would happen if we cut them open. We got all kinds of ideas:
  1. Explode
  2. Vinegar would pop out
  3. Dust
  4. Shoot stuff out
  5. Eggs would be brown and nasty
In actuality, she cut into the egg and the outer membrane was almost like a placenta, it shrunk off in one piece and showed 2 perfectly formed yolks and whites. It almost looked like they had been semi-cooked in some spots. The kids were just amazed.

However, as with all science projects, by the time we had returned home, they had fallen apart and the stench was so awful, it caused me to gack !

Unfortunately, not having a camera at school, I didn't get pictures, but I can tell you the entire class and Shyann were pretty impressed.

So, if you have older children and want to try a fun experiment just try this one. The school secretary even told us she did it as a kid and you can cover the eggs once opened with vinegar for a few more days, they will almost turn to rubber and you can play with them.

Who knew?
