Food Everywhere, What Do You Eat?

Food, it is everywhere we go, at church, at work, at the parks, where ever we turn, we are going to see food at least that is the way it is here in the United States.

I am a baker, I prefer baking cookies, cupcakes, desserts, you name it, I can dish it up. It is a treat for me and for my family and friends.

My husband, oh he is straight up with southern cooking...gravies, sweet tea, breads, etc.

Both of these have taken a toll on not only my weight but my grandchildren's triglycerides and cholesterol which are off the charts.  SHAME ON ME!!

I am always curious what other people eat?  How do you cook or what do you cook?  I am asking for you to let me know what is something you eat regularly that is not loaded with fat or sugar?

Help me eat healthier.

Several things we are going to do is get rid of juice, it is okay once or twice a month, but no more.

Get rid of dessert, we have gotten to where we think we need it every night.

Family walking time.

Tough times ahead but we can do it!

One thing I've been doing lately is substituting zucchini for noodles (like in a lasagna) and eggplant for meat sometimes. It is SO good, less heavy, and you can still eat some of the things you like! I also try to eat a little bit every couple of hours instead of three big meals. Some people think it's bad if if you're eating a little here and there I feel like I'm keeping my energy up, and I eat less overall.

My husband and I started Weight Watchers in April. It's not easy, but it really works. Our cholesterol and triglyceride numbers came way, way down after only three months. If I hadn't seen it, I wouldn't have believed it. We also both lost 20 pounds in less than 2 1/2 months. Good luck!

Tough times, indeed. It sounds like you have a lot of commitment. Sugar is everywhere, in everything. I love baking but hardly do any of it anymore. We eat a lot of fruit, yes sugar, but not the same as cookies and ice cream! Try to get in a green salad EVERY day. Try eggs, plain yoghurt, and avacado for breakfast. If you get enough protein, you won't crave the sweets. Hard to change these habits, but it is possible, and worth it. I sound like an advert, but we've done it, and feel so much better. And don't worry so much about the fat, it's the sugar that is your enemy.

I really think home made desserts are ok AS LONG AS you are not drinking sugar drinks. We don't have desserts in our family because we allow limited juice or make occasional sweet tea. Its one or the other, not both. I don't think its realistic to cut all sugar. In our house we decided that sugar drink held more pull than the dessert.
We just keep it simple. Fresh veggies and meats. We dont sauce but we do season and marinade. We keep starches down to a couple of times a week when possible (rice, pasta, potatoe).
Good luck finding what fits for your family. Its so hard to start on a new path!

Thank you all and our doctor called me yesterday to assure me I have not poisoned them. We are going back in 3 months and redoing the blood work. I love your suggestions, thanks so much!
